A Colchester care home is opening their doors to the community to mark 80 years since the end of World War II.

On Thursday 8th May, Care UK Tall Trees, on Oaks Place, is welcoming local people to honour the 80th anniversary of VE Day with its very own 1940s-themed street party.

VE Day was celebrated on 8th May 1945, after Prime Minister Winston Churchill made an announcement on the radio that the war in Europe had come to an end. This emotional news sparked celebrations across the country, with many taking to the streets for spontaneous parties.

At Tall Trees, from 12 noon-3pm, visitors can join residents for an afternoon of celebrations, including live music from local performer Gwyn Pritchard, a 1940s themed lunch menu and a visit from the Royal British Legion and local cadets.

Earlier in the week, on Tuesday 5th May, Tall Trees residents and their relatives will enjoy a talk by a Heritage Tour representative, and on Wednesday 6th May, the home’s regular friendship café will be open to the community from 2pm-4pm and will receive a 1940s makeover, with team members wearing traditional attire from the era in honour of VE Day.

Alice Banda, Home Manager at Tall Trees, said: “This milestone holds great significance for many of our residents, and we are eager to honour all those who were involved.

“Reminiscence activities are a great way for older people, and those living with dementia, to connect with those around them and help maintain a sense of identity. In the run up to the day, residents have been sharing their own stories and memories – it’s been fantastic to hear everyone’s experiences and learn from one another.”

“We have a week of exciting activities planned for residents and the community, and we’re looking forward to welcoming new and old faces into Tall Trees as we mark such a significant moment in history.”
