Barlborough Primary School was opened in 1870 and extended in the early 1900s. It is a listed building because of its attractive roof. The school which is very popular in the area has grown in size in recent years requiring 3 new classrooms to be built. Although the school now has over 240 children aged from 4 to 11 years it has retained the friendly family atmosphere of a village primary school. Barlborough is a happy school which teachers are loathed to leave consequently there have only been 5 headteachers in the 135 years the school has been open; with the current head in his 23rd year! The staff are conscientious and hard working with a good balance of youth and experience. In 2002 the school gained the Basic Skills Quality Mark. It was awarded the School Achievement award in 2002 and 2003. Also in 2003 it was rated as the 45th most improved primary school in the whole of England.
