The Spireites entertained Oldham in the JPT 1st Round hoping for the result from the last time they met in the competition, the Northern final when Lester scored to win the game and send the Spireites to Wembley.

Tommy Wright now in the hot seat hoping to make the job his own, would have been encouraged after a well earned draw in his first game in charge at Gillingham. In a game where Westcarr gave Spireites an early lead, for it to be cancelled out by a equaliser.  Which hit the work, Lee saved it, but he hit the side net with his fist, which the linesman in my opinion mistakingly gave as a goal, I am still not convinced it crossed the line. Although the media have never questioned it, so it goes down as goal. It was a good performance by the team to earn a draw against a team that had won their first 3 league games.

Boden came into the team in place of the suspended Westcarr, and Randall came into centre midfield instead of Allott. Ridehalgh started at Left back because Smith is out injured. Boden looked very lively and came close to scoring, putting his header just wide. Oldham took the lead when Smith scored with a header from a cross from Croft. Richards had a golden chance to level the score, a mix up left the goal keeper stranded, but Richards took long and the ball was cleared, the ball fell to Randall, he could only shoot over. Half Time 0-1.

The second half Chesterfield came out more determined, and after only 3 minutes, Whittaker found himself one on one with the keeper and calmly scored to put Spireites level. In the 62nd minute, Richards was fouled by Grounds who was on loan at the Spireites last season. Richards got the ball, but Whittaker persuaded him to let him take it, Whittaker then saw his spot kick saved by the keeper. Chesterfield were looking the better team, what ever Tommy Wright had said in his half time team talk, it was having the desired effect. Whittaker came close again, but his shot was saved by the keeper.

Oldam came close to finding the winner, Hughes having beat Tommy Lee with his shot, hit the cross bar. Then disaster for Tommy lee, he went down injured, the physio came on, and he tried to carry on, but he then doubled over in agony, to be replaced by O'Donnell in the 89th minute. It looked like he would shortly be facing penalties. Then Smith, scored his second of the night, although this time it was an own goal, meeting a cross from Talbot to put the Spireites through to the next Round.

A deserved win for Tommy Wright and his team, although it was later revealed Tommy Lee will be out for 6-8 weeks after tests showed he had torn ligaments in his shoulder. O'Donnell will get his chance to prove that he is a quality keeper. Next game is an away fixture at York, although newly promoted from the Conference, it will not be an easy game, as the Spireites search for their first League win.
