237 Spireites turned up at the Recreation ground, to watch the Spireites. The facilities took me back to Saltergate, the toilet; I have seen bigger phone boxes; a food van served hot food; chips, burgers and hot dogs. I had an hot dog for 3 pound which was tasty and quite big.
The sun was shining, the Aldershot fans were in fine voice. Spireites made two forced changes, the injured Hirt and Whittaker were replaced by Allott and Evans. Togwell was made captan, Forbes moved in to centre of defence. Talbot played at right back, Darikwa moved to left wing, with Evans playing on the right.
The first half was very poor, neither side producing many chances. More injury worries for Wright, when Allott went off injured after only 7 minutes to be replaced by Clay.
H.T. 0-0.
In the second half, the Spireites come out full of life, more urgency, good passing and movement. Clay got a yellow after making 2 fouls on Morris. Togwell shot straight at the keeper, having been set up by Westcarr. Again Westcarr caused the Aldershot defence problems, a lovely ball to Atkinson who should have scored, just missed the target with his effort. In the 75th minute Atkinson made up for his miss and this time he took his chance well, when the ball fell to him, after a driving run in to the box from Westcarr. The Aldershot fans had gone quiet, and the Spireite defence stayed solid, to record their first away win of the season.
Man of the match
I'm going to give it to Westcarr, not a natural striker he had to play upfront on his own, he created chances for his team mates and never stop running. Craig Clay has to get a mention, just for his tackle, having been booked earlier, he put in a brilliant tackle to win the ball, had he miss timed it he could have been sent off. I feel he deserves to start the next game, he always gets stuck in, can win the ball and always keeps the ball moving. The back four deserve credit for keeping a clean sheet. They managed to keep Reid quiet, who had just scored 3 in his last game.
Verdict
A poor first half, although a much improved second half performance. Still a lot of improvement to be made, but when you consider there were no natural strikers playing, a lot of players injured, it was a good result.
I'm a big fan of the Spireites and follow them up and down the Country. I got into writing blogs when I was picked to do a blog for the Derbyshire Times for a year, which I really enjoyed. All the views...
