Spireites were going to begin with an unchanged starting line-up against Burton Albion, but Boa Morte picked up an injury in the warm up, so Dickenson started instead. Spireites were looking for their fifth League win in a row, against a team that had become a bit of a bogie team, having beaten the Spireites in every one of the last 3 meetings between the two.
The Spireites took the game to Burton by setting up camp in the visitors half. Although the Manager had changed since the last time both teams had met, Burton were still playing the same tactics, they had come to stop the Spireites from playing and offer little in attack.
Although the Spireites were getting a lot of the ball and causing Burton problems, they were struggling to penetrate the visitors defence. Although Cooper came close from a corner, his header just missed the target.
Burton were now getting into the game, Bell hitting the cross bar with a well struck effort. Maghoma put the visitors ahead when he ran onto a good ball from Zola, he took his chance well, shooting passed Lee into the far corner.
O'Shea came close with an effort that somehow hit the post. Richards had an header from a corner that was blocked on the line. 3 corners saw the Spireites come close to scoring as half-time approached.
H.T. 0-1
Surely not another defeat for the Spireites against Burton, and it looked like they had taken a 2-0 lead when Maghoma scored, after Lee pulled off a brilliant save from Zola, Maghoma was judged to have fouled Lee, by kicking the ball out of his hands.
Having got a way with it, and booyed on by the home supporters, the Spireites seemed to come alive and find another gear. Talbot made a lovely run towards goal and was brought down, protests of a penalty were ignored and the ref gave a free kick just outside the box. Randall struck the woodwork with his well taken free kick.
Dickenson hit a lovely cross, which was met perfectly by Richards, his effort struck the woodwork. Lester was brought on to see if he could find a way through the Burton defence.
Randall who was probably having his best game for the Spireites, was spraying the ball around beautifully, he then picked out Richards with a perfect ball, this time he wasn't going to miss and he scored to put the sides level.
Stand Up wasn't happy though as Burton continued to time waste and constantly win free-kicks through unsporting behaviour. Stand Up said 'I told you I didn't like young refs, and they came here to play Rugby, where as we were trying to play football." Although he did agree with the refs decision to send Jack Lester off, when he wrestled Diamond to the ground, for some reason Jack seems to always get himself sent off around Christmas time.
F.T. 1-1.
Although Stand Up was very happy by the way his team had played, in the second half they gave their all and on another day they might have scored five. It was great to see that the crowd although frustrated, they didn't boo, they didn't moan, they went home happy in the knowledge that their team had done them proud and played some great attacking free flowing football.
Man of the Match was Mark Randall, although everyone deserved praise for their efforts apart from Jack Lester for getting himself sent off.
Next up it's a trip to Southend, a team that are in top form and currently in sixth place in the table. The Spireites will be hoping to get a result there and keep their unbeaten run going.
I'm a big fan of the Spireites and follow them up and down the Country. I got into writing blogs when I was picked to do a blog for the Derbyshire Times for a year, which I really enjoyed. All the views...
