Lester to the rescue to save the Spireites blushes

A 90th minute equaliser from Jack Lester earned Chesterfield a point after trailing Walsall for an hour. Lester starting his first game since September 3rd, after being out injured, could have had an hat-trick had he had a few more games under his belt. The Walsall defence found him a real handful especially in the last 15 minutes when Spireites were on top.

The first fifteen minutes the Spireites rode their luck, giving the ball away in their own half, putting themselves under pressure, it was only poor finishing that Spireites got away with it. Just when the Spireites were getting themseves back into the game, they were caught on the break, Nicholls scored from the edge of the box after a lovely ball from Paterson.  Although Tommy Lee got a hand to it, the ball had just enough power to take it over the goal line.

Chesterfield came out a different side after the restart, after a first which saw them put in one of the worst performances of the season. Mendy had a few chances that he should have done better with, Lester couldn't get the ball under control after a good cross from Morgan. Normally a poacher like Lester would have punished them, with this being his first full game, he hasn't quite got his match sharpness yet. Whittaker almost scored only to see his shot hit the bar. Morgan was taken off to be replaced by Obadeyi, the crowd weren't happy and made Sheridan aware of this, Morgan was causing the Walsall defence a lot of problems. The reason he was taken off, is because the bench had been instructing him to go to byline and behind the Walsall defence. Obadeyi did just that using his lightning pace to get behind the Walsall defence. Walsall were really struggling to cope with the amount of pressure they were under. Finally the goal the Spireites deserved, Whittaker had his shot blocked, Lester pounced to shoot home the equaliser from six yards out. The Spireites legend is back and he sent the Spireites fans home happy, although a win would have been better at least it wasn't another defeat.

With Spireites spending Christmas at the bottom of League One. Only two teams in the last 10 seasons have gone on to avoid relegation. One was Yeovil the other being Chesterfield in 2004, so if anyone can do it the Spireites can. It won't be easy, with trips to Huddesfield and Scunthorpe coming up, hopefully the Spireites can end the year on a high and comeback with some points.
