The Spireites were hoping to get their first away win under Cook against a team that had lost their last 3 League games. Cook kept faith with the team that got a well earned draw at Bradford in midweek. New, on loan signing Brennan Dickenson was on the bench.
It only took 5 minutes for Bristol Rovers to go 1-0 up, a dangerous looking cross put in by Eaves was met by Togwell, trying to clear it, he put it in his own net. Smith had a chance to level, but shot wide.
Chesterfield did manage to draw level after 20 minutes, a free kick taken Randall, was going harmlessly straight to the keeper, the height seemed to decieve him and he ended up carrying the ball into his own net.
Randall put in a lovely ball, which Boden ran onto, he only had to chip the keeper, instead he hit low and the keeper smothered it. The Spireites were beginning to get on top, as Darikwa burst through to find Whittaker, he failed to score. Darikwa was causing Bristol Rovers a lot of problems, got a shot in, which produced a good save from the keeper. The Spireites should have took the lead just before half time, Talbot made a good run into the box forcing the keeper to save, then Whittaker and Boden both from close range failed to convert it, then fell to Randall who hit it wide.
H.T. 1-1.
Togwell hit a shot from distance, which took a deflection and clattered the cross bar. Eaves had the ball on the left, with 2 defenders to beat he got another dangerous low cross in, Anyinsah slid in to score. Eaves who was having a good game, came close to scoring when his effort hit the post.
Dickenson came on for Randall and Lester came on for Boden. The ball fell to Dickenson inside the box, he hit a lovely shot into the top corner, giving the keeper no chance. What a way to mark your League debut.
The Spireites could sense that victory could be theirs. My kids were getting very excited, I had promised them a pound each if they won. Although when I suggested the idea on the way to the match, he got upset, "thats not fair they won't win". I told him they would, I was confident that they would win today. They then struck another deal, 50p for the draw.
With only 10 minutes left, Eaves shot got a big deflection that O'Donnell couldn't reach, my youngest wasn't happy, knowing that he wouldn't be getting any money. Although the Spireites threw everything at them, they couldn't find the breakthrough they needed.
F.T.3-2
Although a good performance from the Spireites, missed chances and poor defending proved costly. Darikwa was my man of the match, a constant threat to the Bristol Rovers defence, the next player would be Dickenson because of the instant impact he had when he came om, bringing the Spireites back into the game.
Next, a home match against Oxford United, a must win game, now they are 18th in the table.
I'm a big fan of the Spireites and follow them up and down the Country. I got into writing blogs when I was picked to do a blog for the Derbyshire Times for a year, which I really enjoyed. All the views...
