Chesterfield FC v Bury Report

Chesterfield cruised to a 4-0 home victory over ten-man Bury.

The opening goal came from Gary Roberts after a smart finish at the back-post. The second came just past the hour mark, with Jay O,Shea firing the ball into the top corner of the net from range.

The third goal was extremely controversial, as the linesman initially flagged for off-side before the referee decided otherwise. To cap off a magnificent overall performance, the Spireites added a fourth, with new signing Dan Gardner on the scoresheet during his debut for the club.

The first opportunity fell to the feet of Roberts, but the winger dragged his effort wide of the post. With eight minutes on the clock, Nathan Cameron was awarded a yellow card for an infringement on Marc Richards.

Nathan Smith was booked for a mis-timed challenge on Andrew Procter with 14 minutes played. Two minutes later, the home side went in front. An O'Shea cross was mistakenly headed into the path of Roberts, who calmly finished at the back-post.

Daniel Nardiello drove into the area unchallenged, although the angle was always against him as his effort went straight into the arms of Chesterfield goalkeeper Tommy Lee. Richards spurned a fantastic opportunity from six yards, as his shot was deflected away for a corner.

On the stroke of half-time, Bury were reduced to ten men after a late challenge from Danny Mayor on Chesterfield defender Matthew Brown.

The Shakers made one change at the break, with Tom Soares replacing Cameron. After the restart, the home side's appeals for a penalty were turned down after Ollie Banks was supposedly brought down in the area.

Nardiello broke free of the hosts' defence, although the flag was already raised for off-side. Chesterfield's second goal was an O,Shea rocket-of-a-shot from 25 yards that went in off the post. With 20 minutes left to play, Armand Gnanduillet replaced Banks.

On 72 minutes, the visitors' Temitope Obadeyi replaced Procter. Chesterfield added a third on 75 minutes after a headed goal from Richards that was initially said to be off-side was overruled by the referee after consultation with the linesman.

The hosts' Roberts was then replaced by Gardner and Bury's Anton Forrester was replaced by Ashley Grimes.

On the counter-attack, Chesterfield finished off the rout with a fourth goal coming from Gardner, after a shot that was parried by visiting goalkeeper Brian Jensen looped over the Dane and into the net.

It was then announced that there would be four minutes of additional time. For the duration of time added on, there wasn't one particular chance of notice as the Spireites picked up a comfortable three points from their first fixture of 2014.
