North Derbyshire Chargers RLFC have been awarded a grant from the People's Health Trust "Healthy Communities Small Grants" program to boost adult participation in all forms of rugby league. The Barlborough based club will receive over £5000 from the Trust as a contribution towards the year-long project that covers full contact, Masters and Touch rugby. The project costs include kit, equipment, coaching, venue hire, volunteer training plus some startup costs for the first year. After that the project should be self-funding.

Chargers Chairman Ged Connolly-Thompson said "We are looking at ways of developing the club into something that's accessible to the wider community.
By including the non-contact form of the game we aim to get more people playing and bring the health benefits of playing sport to the district of Bolsover,
which is currently one of the areas where people are most at risk of diseases associated with lack of exercise and poor diet."

He added "In addition we have a history of rugby league in the area with the old BARLA clubs at Clowne and Shirebrook, and Garibaldi in Mansfield. This
project is looking to bring some of the guys who used to play for these clubs back to the game, There's a wealth of knowledge and love of the game out
there and it'll be great to see some of the lads back on the field. I might even get the boots on myself!"

Using money raised by 51 local society lotteries, the People's Health Trust support Community Interest Companies to help local people in their respective
local communities to identify and fund priorities in their area which help people to have longer healthier lives. Community groups such as sports clubs can
apply and be in receipt of small grants, or larger capital projects.

The full contact squad has started and is training at Barlborough Country Park on Thursdays at 7pm. Details of the Touch Rugby and Masters sessions will
follow.
