Chesterfield were looking to bounce back after losing at home to Dagenham and Redbridge. Clay came back into the team in place of Trotman, he replaced Hird in midfield, the skipper moved back in to central defence. Smith and Whittaker made the bench. Although Richards was hoping to make the squad, he picked up a knock in training on Friday.

The sun was out, it was very warm for October. Just under 200 Town fans had made the long trip to Exeter, although sadly Stand Up could not make it, if he had have made it, because of the distance between us, we would have had to hire John McCririck to communicate with each other.

The first clear chance fell to the home side, O'Flynn was allowed to get a cross in, O'Donnell got a touch on it and it fell to Davies who put it wide.

Hird found Darikwa with a lovely long ball and Atkinson managed to get a shot in,  after a ball from Clay, the ball fell for Westcarr, who had his shot saved.

The Spireites were beginning to put pressure on the Exeter defence, and the ball fell to Darikwa on the righthand side, beating 2 defenders and putting in lovely cross which found Atkinson, he headed home his third league goal for the Spireites.

H.T. 0-1.

Cureton was replaced at half-time by Bauza, great news for the Spireites. He had been in great form so far this season, scoring 9 goals in 10 games.

Exeter came out looking for the equaliser, a lovely tackle from Forbes to stop Bauza in his tracks. Randall came on for Clay, and he managed to have a shot on goal which was saved by the keeper.

Hird headed over from a corner, as Spireites were looking for another goal to make the match safe. Westcarr managed only to beat the offside flag, after a ball from Talbot, but was surrounded by two defenders.

Darikwa who was having his best game in a Spireite shirt and had tormented Exeter defence throughout the game. He outpaced two defenders, but his cross couldn't find Westcarr.

Bauza fired in a thunderbolt, which O'Donnell threw himself at, tipping it over. The Spireites defence dug in, as they went into four minutes of injury time. My man of the match Darikwa, he  found the ball on the left, instead of a cross he decided to waste time, by going to the corner and winning a throw in. He then combined with Boa Morte, as they both shielded the ball. A few moments later the full time whistle was blown.

F.T. 0-1.

The Spireites celebrated what was a well earned victory.  Boa Morte came over and signed autographs,  I managed to shake his hand, and congratulated him. Darikwa was outstanding, this guy has a long bright future ahead of him. Hird also had a great game, putting in some great tackles, and often turning defence into attack and also a constant danger in the opponents penalty box.  Westcarr ran his heart out, and gave his all for the team.

The jigsaw is finally coming together, the team are starting to gel as a unit. Now only a point off the play offs, the team need to convert their away form into their home games. A win against Conference Champions Fleetwood in their next game would see the Spireites in amongst the front runners.

I'm a big fan of the Spireites and follow them up and down the Country. I got into writing blogs when I was picked to do a blog for the Derbyshire Times for a year, which I really enjoyed. All the views...
