A Big 4-0 Win for the Spireites against Wycombe

As the Spireites entered the easter weekend, they knew they had to win both games to have any chance of survival. Ford, Smith and Randall came in for the injured Trotman and the rested Allott and Mendy. The first game up was away at Walsall, which wasn't going to be easy as they sit just above the drop zone.

Spireites started well, Westcarr twice found bowery, but he was twice denied by their keeper Grof. Their in form player Ledesma looked quality and real threat, the Argentinian shot just over from 20 yards. Westcarr found Ridehaigh who crossed it in for Moussa, who scored with a lovely header to put the Spireites one up after 20 minutes.

Although the lead only last 7 minutes, Ledesma was given too much time and space, and scored from just inside the box. More agony for Spireites 6 minutes later when Ledesma was found by Nicholls, who slotted home his second. Half time the Spireites went in 2-1 down.

Spireites came out determined to get back into the game. After 9 minutes Bowery played a lovely one-two with Randall, who chipped the keeper to put the scores level. Sadly Walsall were back in front after just 4 minutes, when Mantom scored from 10 yards out.

The Spireites kept up the fight, with Randall playing some lovely balls in midfield, at one point he lost the ball, but showed determination to win it back. Moussa had another good game and Bowery never stopped running. In the end the Spireites lost 3-2 and relegation looks very likely. The team was clapped off the field and fans sang "Spireite till I die", a lot better than the booing they had at the last home game.

The Spireites welcomed fellow relegation strugglers Wycombe to the B2 NET. Two changes, in came Juan and Mendy, replacing Hurst and Smith. A five man midfield saw Moussa, Randall and Juan in the centre flanked by Mendy and Westcarr with Bowery playing the loan striker.

Straight away Lee had to make a save with his legs to deny Hackett. The heavens opened up and neither side could get going. Spireites started to get into the game, Mendy a good run and cut inside, which ended with a corner. From the kick Westcarr tapped in from close range. The Spireites went in 1-0 up at half time.

The Spireites came straight out of the traps, Juan played a nice pass out wide to Boden, he kept the ball well, and found Moussa, he ran in to slot the ball home. Just 2 minutes had gone in the 2nd half and the Spireites were 2 up. Four minutes later a clearance from Ford found Mendy, who ran from just over the halfway line, he bamboozled McCoy, and strode into the area, he then curled a lovely shot past their keeper.

Bowery had been causing Wycombe all kinds of problems, he kept running behind them and they struggled to cope with him, he picked the ball up on the left, he held off their man and created space for himself and then rifled a shot past their keeper into the net.

At the final whistle the crowd was on their feet, to celebrate a convincing 4 nil victory, and a dominant display from the midfield, Moussa put in an awesome display and Randall and Juan linked up really well together. Juan the ball winner, we have been crying out for and Randall the playmaker. The Spireites might be playing football in league 2 next season, but they are going to go down fighting.
