In thanks for surviving a shipwreck, the Earl of Cornwall founded Hailes Abbey in 1246. The site today is picturesque and quiet, perfect for picnics or taking a relaxing walk around the ruins listening to the complimentary audio tour. Hailes Abbey is managed by English Heritage.

Unlike some historic abbeys, Hailes was not built to house large numbers of monks yet it cared for a very unique relic – “The Holy Blood of Hailes”, a phial of Christ’s own blood. After the Dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry VIII, only a few of the arches remained at Hailes Abbey. Today, these arches are still visible alongside the original foundations of the church, protected in the tranquil site.

The relaxed atmosphere at Hailes Abbey can be brought to life with interpretation panels, free audio tours and a museum that holds the abandoned objects and sculptures found on site. The day can be complemented with a visit to a nearby church where there are fine medieval wall paintings.

The Abbey is open from April to end of October. 2014 opening times can be found online nearer the open season.
