The ten red telephone boxes on the Promenade are be restored and renovated for a brand new life, with help from the Cheltenham Arts Panel and Cheltenham Borough Council.

These iconic structures stand proud on the Prom but are no longer usable for their original purpose and subject to vandalism.

The program aims to decommission the boxes, stripping out the equipment yet repainting them and rebuilding as many original features as possible. Once complete the boxes will be managed by The Wilson and be used for art installations as well as other purposes.

They will also house the power and water supplies required for the many markets and events held on the Prom, avoiding the need for the noisy power generators.

The phone boxes will disappear for a while as they are renovated off site. Cllr Andrew McKinlay, cabinet member for built environment, continues: “We’re really pleased that we’ve managed to secure this funding and can now start work to restore the boxes and utilise them to make a positive difference to residents, visitors and local businesses.

Keep an eye out for the restored phone boxes when they return. Oh and by the way – if you ever actually want to make a phone call, there is a working call box close-by at Imperial Circus near the end of Post Office Lane!
