The 25th January is St Dwynwen’s Day – the Welsh St Valentines
St Dwynwen the Welsh patron saint of lovers is celebrated on 25th January – a great time as many of us will probably have the winter blues so this is the ideal time to treat your loved one and bring some sunshine into your lives. The 25th falls on a Monday so why not celebrate the weekend before.  Carmarthen is so fortunate to have many yummy restaurants if the way to your lover’s heart is through food!
If you fancy a real treat why not book a table at the Angel Vaults – the food is wonderful - a very romantic setting over looking the Castle.    Round the corner in Queen Street is Restaurant7teen who had a great review by the Sunday Lunch Club in Cardigan’s Tivyside Newspaper.   If you would like something a little different try Ginger.  It is a fabulous Indian Restaurant – the best I have ever tried and the service is exemplary.
Why not have a night away.  There is Gwenllian Court Hotel nr Kidwelly a very friendly hotel and the food is excellent.   For a real treat why not spend a night at Hurst House on the Marsh near Laughne – a very romantic setting indeed

So who is  St Dwynwen?.  She was apparently the prettiest daughter of Bychan Brycheiniog’s 24 daughters.  Although  Prince Mawlon Dafodrill was Dwynwen’s one and only love it was doomed from the start as her father had already arranged another suitor.
Heartbroken Dwynwen begged God to make her forget him.  This God did by turning Maelon into a block of ice and giving Dwynwen a sweet potion designed to block her memory of Maelon.  Dwynwen was granted three wishes, the first of which was for Maelon to be thawed!  The second was for  God to meet the hopes and dreams of true lovers and the third was the Dwynwen would never marry but devote herself to God’s service and in doing so founded a convent on Llanddwyn off  Anglesey.  Dwynwen died in 465 AD.  For more information on St Dwynwen click here
If not going out why not buy a gift for your loved one or send flowers. Stems is a fab florist in Queens Street which create beautiful innovative bouquets.  There are also some lovely gift shops such as Nona which stocks some unique jewellery.

Happy St Dwynwen's Day to lovers everywhere!
