The annual Christmas Tree Decorating Competition for Schools takes place at the National Botanic Garden of Wales on Thursday December 3.

There will be more that 500 schoolchildren from 24 schools – from as far afield as Pembroke Dock, Newcastle Emlyn and Jersey Marine – descending on the Great Glasshouse to prove who is top of the tinsel pops.

The competition is sponsored by Carmarthenshire County Council, Forestry Commission Wales, HSBC, Career Wales West,  Dwr Cymru, EcoSchools and Trysordy.

There are cash prizes for the best dressed trees and runners-up prizes in both primary and secondary school sections.

Head of Learning at the Garden Jane Richmond said: “It is always a fanstastic day here at the Garden with some incredibly innovative designer decorations. All the materials have to be recycled and no fairy lights are allowed.”

This year’s competition theme is ‘Christmas Around the World’.

The schools taking part are:  (primary) Dafen, Crymlyn, Meidrim, Talgarreg, Tremoilet, Rhydaman, Pembrey, Stebonheath, Ysgol y Fro, Carway, St Mary’s, Pembroke Dock; St Mary’s, Carmarthen; Blaendulais, Waun Wen, Gorslas, Stepaside, and Becca. (secondary) Emlyn School, Amman Valley, QE High, Bro Gwaun,, Gwendraeth, Dyffryn Taf and Tregib.
