Winter 2016 sees the arrival of new boutique hotel The Northgate in Bury St Edmunds, a re-invention and complete renovation of the former Ounce House Hotel in Northgate Street.
This modern townhouse hotel, bar and restaurant retains the character of the building’s Georgian past, yet seamlessly combines it with modern amenities and luxurious fittings, giving discerning travellers and diners a stylish alternative to the corporate environment of most city hotels.
The Northgate is the latest hotel venture from multi award winning team The Chestnut Group, which has already transformed a number of pubs and hotels in the region; their pub/hotel The Packhorse Inn near Newmarket has quickly earned accolades including:
Whether you’re enjoying dinner with friends or staying for a leisurely weekend break,
The Northgate aims to offer guests a contemporary “home away from home” feeling and the highest level of comfort and care.
The hotel’s 10 individually-designed en-suite bedrooms are furnished with a mix of traditional and antique furnishings, and all have the elegant proportions, large windows and high ceilings typical of a Georgian building.
The décor is opulent but relaxed, with oversized headboards, chic French-style furniture, indulgent fabrics and luxurious Noble Isle toiletries. Some rooms have standalone claw-foot baths in the bedrooms, and all rooms have modern facilities like WiFi, flat screen TV/DVD players, direct dial phones and luxury bathroom fittings.
The aim of the restaurant and bar at The Northgate is to appeal to a wide clientele, from locals having a quiet evening drink to foodies looking for a special evening out and a fine dining experience.
Food will be served all day from breakfast (available to non-residents) to bar snacks and afternoon teas, through to an a la carte menu and unique “Chef’s Table” where diners can get right in amongst the action and see their meals being prepared from start to plate.
The Northgate’s head chef Dan Grigg is one of the youngest chefs to have achieved 3 AA Rosettes, so fine food is assured across all the menus.
On warmer days the large terrace will become an attractive outdoor dining area, or a place to just relax with a locally-brewed beer, a cocktail or a glass of wine.
The separate Club Room is available for private or business functions, and can accommodate from 10 to 30 guests depending on requirements. For private dining you can select from the restaurant menu or organise something unique for your group. For businesses, the state of the art multimedia facilities make the Club Room an ideal environment for meetings and client presentations.
Come and Stay in Bury St Edmunds
The plan for The Northgate is to create a welcoming venue that will tempt London’s busy professionals to come and switch off for the weekend, retired couples to treat themselves to mid-week deals, businesses to choose as a welcome alternative to faceless chain hotels, and locals to enjoy great food and drink with family and friends.
Going by The Chestnut Group’s remarkable success so far, we expect them to achieve all their aims and create a hotel and restaurant that Bury St Edmunds can be proud of.
