Through film, sound, archival materials, photography, scientific fieldwork, and soil DNA analysis, the artists approach the hillside as a palimpsest, a landscape continuously rewritten across centuries and beyond. Volcanic geology, agricultural history, destructive hill fires, colonial intervention, and ongoing ecological restoration are all layered within the same landscape. In this reading, a single hillside becomes a site of entanglement, where past, present, and future do not unfold in sequence but coexist and refract through one another.  Bones of Our Land invites us to listen anew to the soil, the forest, and the living archive buried beneath our feet. 

Co-curated by Chloe Chow, Louise Fedotov-Clements, videoclub and Gallery Lock In. Commissioned by WMA, a non-profit platform dedicated to facilitating greater understanding of Hong Kong through lens-based art, for the 2025/26 theme Hope. 

Tsz Wai Pun and Coşkun Güçlü bring together artistic and ecological approaches, combining lens-based practice, fieldwork and scientific research to explore the histories and changing ecologies of Tai Mo Shan.

Photoworks Festival 2026 takes place across Brighton & Hove from 2 October to 1 November, bringing together exhibitions, events and opportunities to experience photography in many different forms. Alongside exhibitions presented across the city, the festival programme includes a conference, portfolio reviews, talks, workshops and film screenings.

The festival theme, Un/Stable: Lands, Anxieties, Dreams, explores the connections between identity, memory, community and the environment. Throughout the month the festival brings together diverse perspectives on ecosystems, personal and global archives, forest restoration and the complex relationships between human and non-human worlds. Featuring work by young people, emerging and established artists the exhibitions invite us to question representation within archives, think critically about personal histories and explore what it means to live with uncertainty while imagining hopeful futures.

This year Photoworks annual publication no. 33, available from our website, titled Cosmophotologies, explores the festival theme through the enquiry into what kinds of worlds photography makes possible.

Gallery Lock In was set up as a platform for artists working in durational performance to open up a critical debate with their live and non-live audiences; its main curatorial focus is the social, psychological and physical boundaries of the body and mind. Since 2016, it has a permanent space and hosts socially engaged visual art exhibitions.

The Gallery supports emerging and mid-career artists, as well as giving a platform to international artists and those who are excluded from the mainstream and market-driven arts. As a non-profit space, it focuses on works that are temporal including performance, installation and video, as well as providing residency and workshop space for local artists.
