A Bracknell care home is opening its doors to the community to mark 80 years since the end of World War Two.

On Thursday 8th May, from 4pm-6pm, Care UK’s Bickerton House, on Warfield Road, is welcoming local people to honour the 80th anniversary of VE Day with its very own 1940s-themed street party.

VE Day was celebrated on 8th May 1945, after Prime Minister Winston Churchill made an announcement on the radio that the war in Europe had come to an end. This emotional news sparked celebrations across the country, with many taking to the streets for spontaneous parties.

At Bickerton House, the team has been hard at work organising their own special commemorative event with VIP guests, including Geraldine Lejeunethe Deputy Lieutenant of Berkshire and Councillor Jenny Penfold, the Mayor of Bracknell.

To keep the 1940s spirit alive, guests can tap their feet to live entertainment, play traditional games, browse 1940s-themed retro stalls, as well enjoy a traditional afternoon tea, specially prepared by the home’s Head Chef.

Resident,Maisie Gerring, said: “I remember the war and hiding under the tables with my

family whenever the planes came over. MyDad was a patrol man, and he had to make sure all the homes were dark. On VE Day, I remember everyone was happy and relieved, and we all partied in the streets with our friends and family. It’s important we continue to come together to commemorate the day and pass on the memories of the people that fought for us.”

Michael Pallister, Home Manager at Bickerton House, said: “Here at Bickerton House, we’re thrilled to be marking the 80th anniversary of VE Day with the help of the community – and especially delighted to be welcoming the Mayor of Bracknell and the Deputy Lieutenant of Berkshireto the occasion.

“We know this is a very important milestone for residents and are looking forward to having the opportunity to learn more about this poignant period,as well as host a fantastic street party.

“On behalf of the whole team, I’d like to extend our welcome to anyone interested in coming along for what we anticipate will be an informative and enriching day!”
