Barnstaple Dementia Action Alliance was set up in August 2014. The committee is made up of like minded people from different organisations and businesses which include Barnstaple library, Barnstaple town Council, Age Concern Barnstaple and District, Barnstaple Memory Cafe and Pilton House.

We have 4 main aims which are:

  • Increasing Awareness and understanding of dementia.
  • Supporting the development of a role for people with dementia.
  • Establishing “community support” including local business & shop schemes.
  • Breaking down barriers and helping remove stigmatisation.

We would love for all businesses, organisations and schools to be involved. They can do this by becoming members of Barnstaple Dementia Action Alliance and let us know how they think they can help us achieve our aims. They can also agree an action point such as all first aiders becoming Dementia Friends and put this on the dementia action alliance website- this can be linked to the profile we have on there.

Since the Dementia Friends incentive has been launched there are now 1million Dementia Friends across the country and the Prime Minister has set a new challenge of getting 4 million by 2020. In our committee we have a couple of Dementia Friends Champions who can run the sessions which last 45-60 minutes and are free.

There are many local services within the town if Barnstaple which can help those with Dementia and their carers. Some of these are Barnstaple Memory Cafe, Pilton Memory Cafe, Alzheimer’s Society, Devon Carers and groups within the local library.
