With festival season officially under way, a care home in Barnsley is welcoming the community for a fun-filled day of food and celebration.

On Saturday 8th August from 2pm-4pm, Care UK’s Sid Bailey will open its doors to families and neighbours for a food festival, inviting guests to tuck in and celebrate the nation’s shared love of great cuisine, community and connection.

Visitors to the Knollbeck Lane home can look forward to a cosy pop-up cafe experience, complete with cherished family recipes shared by residents, including Sylvia’s apple pie and Pauline’s victoria sponge cake, as well as homemade favourites such as traditional meat and potato pie.

Sylvia Dalton, resident at Sid Bailey, said: “That apple pie recipe has been in my family for three generations, and honest to goodness, no fancy store bought stuff can match it. Just thinking about the whole place smelling like cinnamon and butter again...it’s going to feel like home.”

The event is part of the ‘A Taste of Home’ initiative, which will see Care UK homes across the country host foodie-themed celebrations and share what life in a care home is really like.

Each festival will showcase sustainable, community-focused initiatives while celebrating the diversity and creativity within the homes, from residents’ favourite recipes and traditional dishes to seasonal menus featuring locally sourced ingredients.

Victoria Alder, Home Manager at Sid Bailey, said: “Our food festival offers a wonderful opportunity for residents to rediscover their favourite childhood traditions and recipes and share them with the local community.

“Food plays an important part in all of our lives, and there’s something special about the way it can evoke happy memories and emotions. That’s why sharing family recipes and favourite dishes is so meaningful for residents here.

“We’d love for the community to join us, experience these much-loved dishes and celebrate the stories behind them – it’s shaping up to be a truly special day.”
