The Barnet Diamond Jubilee Gateway Project

A fundraising drive has been launched to create a lasting physical commemoration to the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, in the civic heart of the borough of Barnet - The Burroughs in Hendon.

An independent non-political group of Barnet residents and business owners have formed the Diamond Jubilee Commemoration Committee and are now working towards the creation of a £250,000 gateway between the Hatchcroft Building and the Ricketts Quadrangle on the edge of the Middlesex University complex.

The Gateway will be made out of 60 columns, each marked with a date representing one of Her Majesty’s years on the throne and each column will be a different size depending on the birth-rate of that year (the higher the birth-rate, the bigger the column).

The Gateway will also be an interactive learning hub for the community, with QR codes present around the site directing visitors to a dedicated website with key facts and information on Her Majesty’s 60-year reign.

As well as having a register of war memorials in Barnet, the website will also have images and videos of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations, including more than 90 street parties, celebrations in Golders Hill Park, the Civic Service held to mark Her Majesty’s accession to the throne and many hours of interviews recorded with elderly residents reflecting their memories of Royal events.

The committee is looking for donations large and small to make this project a reality. All donors will have their name recorded on the website in perpetuity.

Other donation levels and their results can be seen below:

1. Donations of or in excess of £1,000 will ensure that your individual, group or firm name and details are used in an online explanatory narrative and commemorative book entry.

2. To have your individual, group or firm name inscribed on the donor’s band on one of the Gateway’s wooden poles bearing (subject to availability) the date of your choice, together with an explanatory website narrative and commemorative book entry will require a donation of in excess of £5,000.

3. Certain key dates of the Monarch’s reign have been reserved as ‘Premium Posts’ to be the subject of Sealed Bids. These are 1952, 1953, 1977, 2002 and 2012. We expect that a number of firms, groups or individuals will want the enhanced visibility that association with one of these dates will bring.

4. As a final inducement, those who donate in excess of £10,000 will be able to use the official ‘Barnet Diamond Jubilee Commemoration Supporter’ logo on letterheads and advertising for the remainder of 2013 and 2014.

You can see more information at www.barnetdiamondjubilee.mdx.ac.uk and an animation of the Gateway here.

Any questions and early pledges of interest or financial pledges should be made at this stage by email to diamondjubilee@barnet.gov.uk.
