Are your teeth, gums and oral hygiene ready for World Kissing Day?

If you missed National Kissing Day on 20th June 2013, and didn’t pucker up enough, all’s not lost. For Saturday 6th July is World Kissing Day so you have plenty of time to plan who you’ll be locking lips with.

How will you celebrate? By going for the longest kiss or by trying the most kisses you can fit in during the day?

Either way it might be helpful to ensure your oral hygiene is in tip top condition.

So are you giving your teeth a good brush twice a day, morning and evening? Brushing after you’ve eaten is good too and don’t forget to rinse your mouth with a mouthwash to fight bacteria.

What about flossing? You should do this at least once a day too but each time you clean your teeth is better still as it removes the bits of food which get stuck between your teeth and helps avoid plaque building up.

How’s your toothbrush looking? If you’ve scrubbed it to within an inch of its life, probably best to sling it and get one with round bristles that are soft so they won’t damage your mouth, teeth and gums. Go for one which has a small brush head so it can get to all the nooks and crannies in your mouth. And aim to replace it every 3 months.

Are you cleaning your teeth the right way? Use your brush at a 45 degree angle and move it in small circular movements on both sides of each tooth. Then move it back and forth over the biting surfaces of your teeth. Giving your tongue a brush will also help to freshen your breath and clean your mouth. If you feel you need more help try an electric toothbrush instead.

Of course this is where your dentist and dental hygienist come in to spot any problems and advise you on how to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

When did you last see your dentist? You should visit your dentist every 6 months or so for a check-up. So if you haven’t been for a while you’ve still time to make an appointment so you're ready for World Kissing Day.
