An Altrincham care home is opening its doors to the community to mark 80 years since the end of World War II.

On Thursday 8th May, from 2pm–4pm, Care UK’s Halecroft Grange, on Hale Road, is welcoming local people to honour the 80th anniversary of VE Day with its very own 1940s themed afternoon.

VE Day was celebrated on 8th May 1945, after Prime Minister Winston Churchill made an announcement on the radio that the war in Europe had come to an end. This emotional news sparked celebrations across the country, with many taking to the streets for spontaneous parties.

At Halecroft Grange, the team has been hard at work organising their own special commemorative event, which will see residents and guests enjoy an afternoon of delicious food, entertainment and fun dancing as they celebrate the spirit of the 1940s.

As part of the day’s celebrations, guests will enjoy a performance from the VE80 D-Day Dollies, who will be singing well-loved songs from the era dressed in authentic Second World War uniforms. There will also be a selection of 1940s-inspired food and refreshments, followed by a performance of The Last Post on the cornet by a member of the Irlam and Cadishead Band. To round off the afternoon, the team will plant a “Peace” rose in the garden as a lasting tribute to mark this important milestone in history.

Resident, Alma Hepworth said: “It is important to remember VE Day and what so many gave for our freedom. The next generations must remember the sacrifices given by so many.

“I remember during the war it was a combination of sadness at the loss of life but also joy at the camaraderie of ordinary people. The coming together of people from all walks of life.”

Suzi Sumegi, Home Manager at Halecroft Grange, said: “We’re passionate about building and maintaining relationships within our community here at Halecroft Grange, so we’re pleased to be opening our doors to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day for a special day of sharing memories and dancing like it’s the 1940s.

“Reminiscence activities are a great way for older people, especially those living with dementia, to connect with those around them and help maintain a sense of identity. In the run up to the day, residents have been sharing their own stories and it’s been inspiring to hear everyone’s experiences and memories from wartime Britain.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming our friends and neighbours into Halecroft Grange for a day to remember.”

Designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence, Halecroft Grange, which remains open to potential residents, incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities. The building has been configured into a series of neighbourhoods to help facilitate the creation of close-knit communities and encourage social interaction among the residents.
