The Whole Food Depot has been established since 1994. Lindsay & Elizabeth Mulligan have recognised that more & more people wish to eat healthily & have started a new business supplying organic & natural produce.
Lindsay (49) had the idea to open The Whole Food Depot, which is based on Churchill Way in Lomeshaye Business Village, eighteen months ago. A year later she decided to fulfil her dream of starting a business, while continuing her full time job as a senior midwife at Burnley General Hospital.
The mother of three has realised the importance of healthy eating for everybody - in particular women who suffer from breast cancer. Women with this form of cancer tend to have high oestrogen levels & cannot eat dairy products. The majority of The Whole Food Depot's produce is dairy & gluten free & they use potato starch packaging instead of plastic, as it is better for the environment.
Lindsay's daughter, Elizabeth (25) has left a job in insurance to help her mum run the business & make it a success. A recent law graduate, Elizabeth is very keen to help her mum get the business off the ground.
The Whole Food Depot opened its doors to the public in December 2004, selling organic fair trade produce that is sourced locally & from overseas. Products such as cheeses & jams are sourced in Lancashire & other products are imported from as far away as the Kalahari Desert.
Lindsay ensures all her produce is bought from fair trade sources which means that farmers receive the highest price possible for their products. She says: "We target anyone who has a health conscious attitude towards food, who has a dietary need or allergy or anyone who wants to shop ethically. We sell a whole range of products from vegetables to babywipes & if we don't stock something we aim to get it for our customers. People have the perception that organic food is expensive but this is no longer the case."
