Go behind the scenes of The Abbey Sutton Courtenay, a Grade 1 listed courtyard Manor House now run as a retreat centre. Explore 700 years of history, see the unique Great Hall & appreciate the restoration achieved during the last 40 years. We invite you to come and see behind the scenes of our glorious grade 1 listed Medieval Courtyard Manor House surrounded by 4 acres of wildlife-rich woods, productive walled garden and grassland just south of Abingdon.

The Abbey is stewarded as a retreat and conference centre and as the charity approaches 40 we celebrate the restoration achieved since 1979 and look to future-proofing the building for those who will live here during the next 40 years.

Take a guided tour of the House and Gardens with Linda Hull and Jackie Shayler Webb, two members of the residential lay community which cares for the building, grounds and guests.

This is our first time taking part in Heritage Open Days and we hope people will also enjoy seeing how we have been greening up our guesthouse and the plans we have for tackling heat loss in the medieval building.

We’ll also look around the grounds stopping to look in on Shed Oxford, to marvel at the inside of the bee hives in the orchard and to stand for a moment under the wonderful, natural cathedral of the massive plane tree on the West Lawn.

To round it all off, in true Abbey style, we will repair to the Dining Room for lashings of hot warming tea and coffee and a selection of delicious cakes home-baked by Vicki Churchill, one of our resident chefs.

All proceeds support restoration at The Abbey.

Max 12 people per tour/session.

Tours take 30-45 minutes We want more people to know The Abbey. To this end, we are developing a history of the building since its foundation in the late 1200s by piecing together the story of who has lived here over the centuries. We are also drawing together the threads of the history of the charity which has stewarded it during the last 40 years. If you have any knowledge to share as a former resident, staff member or guest, or remember the place from growing up in the village, when it was owned by David Astor and run by the Ockenden Venture housing post war refugees, we would especially love to hear from you!
