A care home in Aberdeen is opening its doors to the community to mark 80 years since the end of World War II.

On Thursday 8th May, from 2.30pm-3.30pm, Care UK’s Tor-Na-Dee, on North Deeside Road, is welcoming local people to honour the 80th anniversary of VE Day with its very own 1940s-themed celebration.

VE Day was celebratedon 8thMay 1945, after Prime Minister Winston Churchill made an announcement on the radio that the war in Europe had come to an end. This emotional news sparked celebrations across the country, with many taking to the streets for spontaneous parties.

At Tor-Na-Dee, the team has been hard at work organising their own special commemorative event, which will see residents and guests enjoy an afternoon of delicious food and entertainment as they embrace the spirit of the 1940s

Residents and guestscan enjoy a street-party-style event, complete with festive decorations, music, and a selection of delicious refreshments.Later in the afternoon, the entertainment will continue with a special performance by Raymond.

This celebration holds particular significance for the residents of Tor-Na-Dee, many of whom have vivid memories of this historic time.

Resident Gordon, age 88, shared his thoughts on the era: “I joined the army at 20 because I just wanted to get out and laugh.”

Mabel, now 93, fondly remembers celebrating VE Day with a joyful street party surrounded by neighbours and music.

Frances also recalled how, during the war, her family wasn’t allowed to watch the news, a memory that has stayed with her over the years.

Susan Ashton, Home Manager at Tor-Na-Dee, said: We’re passionate about building and

maintaining relationships within our community here at Tor-Na-Dee, so we’re pleased to

be opening our doors to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day for a special day of sharing

memories and a fabulous celebration.

“Reminiscence activities are a great way for older people, especially those living with

dementia, to connect with those around them and help maintain a sense of identity. In the

run up to the day, residents have been sharing their own stories and it’s been inspiring to

hear everyone’s experiences and memories from wartime Britian.

We’re looking forward to welcoming our friends and neighbours into Tor-Na-Dee for a day

to remember.”

Tor-Na-Dee provides full-time residential, nursing and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care. Designed to enable residents to live enjoyable and fulfilling lives, the care home has its very own cinema room and hairdressers, and there is plenty of space both indoors and out for relaxation and recreation.
