Pontefract Castle was one of the most important administrative centres in the country during the Middle Ages. It became a royal castle in 1399, upon the accession of Henry Bolinbroke to the throne. Richard ll subsequently died in the Castle the following year after being one of many important prisoners to lodge there.
Pontefract Castle is open Monday - Friday from 8.30am until Dusk and Saturday - Sunday from 10.00am until Dusk. Includes a visitor centre and shop.
