A weekend of fun and festivities.
Wakefield Council has organised the weekend's celebrations as part of the fantastic Experience Summer Fun Festival and it starts on Friday 1st August with guided walks around the city centre to mark Yorkshire Day.
This will be followed by a multi-cultural mela on the Saturday and the community run Portobello Gala on the Sunday.
The Rambling Rose Walk will be led by Kevin Trickett of Wakefield Civic Society, who will talk about Yorkshire people and traditions as experienced in Wakefield. The walk sets off from The Tourist Information Centre in the Bullring and includes a half-hour stop at Wakefield Art Gallery for a talk. The three hour tour ends at the Cathedral.
The Mela aims to create a celebratory day for the diverse cultures in the Wakefield district. There will be many family activities, performers and the chance to sample food from around the world and to shop at the global market.
The Mela will be held in the Cathedral Precinct and will include a global market, stage performances and other entertainment and street theatre.
The Global Market will be running Thursday 31st July to Sunday 3rd August and will sell a great selection of goods, clothing and items for the home as well as food and produce from around the globe.
The weekend ends with the community-led Portobello Carnival on the Sunday. The celebrations begin with a parade by youngsters in carnival costumes. It leaves the community centre at 1.30pm and will stop at three points in the estate for performances to take place.
The parade will culminate with a gala held outside the Rainbow Cafe on Duke of York Avenue, which will feature dance, drumming, samba and art and craft workshops.
