Fire River Poets celebrate National Poetry Day
9 October 2008
Poetry at The Brewhouse: the celebration by Fire River Poets of the twenty years since it was inaugurated (1988) continues on 9 October, National Poetry Day, with a Poetry Reading to follow on from the very successful Poetry Café held in March, the reading by Mary Maher in June and the Quantock Walk (muddy) and Dinner (excellent) in August.
The featured poet for National Poetry Day will be Andy Brown who is well known to us in the South West both as poet and as teacher of creative writing and gaining an increasing respect nationally as a poet with something significant to say. He is currently Director of the Centre for Creative Writing at Exeter University.
Chairman of Fire River Poets, John Stuart, said "It is very appropriate that we should have Andy join us on National Poetry Day. He has an enviable reputation as a teacher as well as being a first class poet and National Poetry Day is all about poets of all ages and experience celebrating our love of words. If anybody can help us do that, it’s Andy."
Members of Fire River Poets will be reading alongside Andy and the celebratory note will be very much in evidence, as John was at pains to point out. "We always provide a platform for poets of all ages and levels of experience, so there will as usual be an open mic session during the evening for any poet who would like to come along and read."
Poets who would like to take advantage of this should contact me to book a place and for further details either on 01823 252486 or by email: wj.stuart@sky.com
The reading begins at 8.00 pm, takes place in the Studio and costs £5.00.
Tickets from the Brewhouse box office (01823 283244).
