Stamford Corn Exchange Theatre - a brilliant conversion of the Exchange Hall into a proper theatre – presents a whole range of productions for all tastes.
Stamford Corn Exchange Theatre
In 1858, Edward Browning’s design for an Exchange Hall in Stamford’s Broad Street was executed, and was intended to be both a corn exchange and a theatre to house shows and entertainments. Although damaged by fire during the mid-lent fair week of 1925, it was restored, and continued to act as a dance hall and theatre as well as a cinema, a roller skating rink, and an auction room. From the 1960s it was used as an antique centre and auction room and continued to act as one of Stamford’s theatres, with various productions and shows. In 2001 work began to restore the building into a full-time theatre for Stamford.
Open for Business
Stamford’s new theatre opened at the start of 2008. Building of new dressing rooms and refurbishment of the theatre entrance area is still going on today, and a large area for hire is to be created in the existing ground floor space.

The CETC
The Corn Exchange Theatre Company is a charitable trust set up in January 2001 by a small group of enthusiasts with the intention of taking over the lease of the Corn Exchange and promoting its future as a centre for the performing arts in Stamford. The huge task of refurbishing it into a theatre (mainly by volunteers) began when an 80 year lease was secured.
Stamford Corn Exchange Theatre’s Aims and Objectives
... are to establish and then maintain a self-financing, multi-functional arts and theatre complex available to the local Stamford community throughout the year. With this in mind, the premises had to be put to work as soon as possible, creating a business centre that could raise the much needed working capital to complete the theatre. The function hall was sub-let to an auctioneer, a kitchen area was installed for use by theatre groups during show week, and the huge cellars were cleared ready for refurbishment.
The Theatre’s Future - youth
Looking forward, it’s planned to have discussions with Stamford's local schools, colleges and others on the best ways to involve young people in the Corn Exchange Theatre project in a broad spectrum of music, dramatic arts and dance. It is also planned that the disabled should be encouraged, not just by providing facilities such as disabled stage access - but with specialist instruction and classes enabling them to take an active part in shows and productions.
Success
Amateur, school and professional productions have been attracted to Stamford’s newest theatre and the Corn Exchange Theatre Company is proud to offer Stamford a large variety of entertainments. With lift access to all areas, four wheelchair spaces, a bar area offering soft and alcoholic drinks and a selection of sweets and ice creams at all performances, Stamford’s newest entertainment centre has truly arrived.
