Birley Spa Victorian Bathhouse tourist attraction is a historic and architectural gem hidden in grounds secluded by a ravine in a woodland setting off Birley Spa Lane at Hackenthorpe, Sheffield.
It's the only Victorian bathhouse in South Yorkshire that is set in its original grounds. Like the more famous spas at Buxton and Bath, Birley Spa was prized for the reputedly medicinal qualities of the waters.
Thought to be the only Victorian Bath House intact with its grounds in South Yorkshire, the tourist attraction dates back to 1843, when it was built for Earl Manvers, Lord of the Manor of Beighton, Sheffield. It was first built as a hotel with spa baths beneath and has also been used for private dwellings.
When spas went out of fashion Birley closed and fell into disrepair, narrowly escaping demolition in 1960. Fortunately, in 1967 the Bath House gained a Grade II listed building status.
Its architectural features have been reinstated, with security measures and disabled access added to make it a community, educational and cultural heritage resource for the area.
The Bath House improvements allow sunlight into an atmosphere of quiet dignity, whilst renovation of the community hall’s windows makes for a more attractive public facility.
Its return to public use has been made possible thanks to a Heritage Lottery grant, plus funding from the South Yorkshire Forest Partnership.
There are guided tours first Saturday of every month 10.00 am - 12.00 noon at the Victorian bathhouse tourist attraction.
