The Turner Museum of Glass houses one of the UK's most interesting and comprehensive collections of 19th and 20th century works ranging from drinking glasses to contemporary glass art.
The museum was founded in 1943 by Professor W.E.S. Turner who established the academic discipline of glass technology. As a keen collector, his intentions for the museum were to be able to show beautiful objects alongside the academic discipline of glass technology; acting as an inspiration for all those working with glass.
The exhibits at the Turner Museum of Glass demonstrate the skill and artistry of all the major European and American glassmakers, and especially interesting is the display of glass from the 1920s to the 1950s.
There are over 380 pieces on permanent display at the museum.
The museum is located in the University of Sheffield’s Department of Engineering Materials and welcomes visitors and educational school visits from all around.
