When the season started I donʼt think many Sheffield Wednesday
fans were expecting to be fighting a battle against
relegation. After the strong run at the end of last year I
was hoping for a play-off challenge. In many ways it has
been a season of disappointment, but how will it end
At least Wednesdayʼs destiny is in their own hands, with fixtures
against three more teams in danger. But then again, all the
other teams involved can say this. Two wins will be enough
for survival, but winning two games out of three when you have
only won 12 out of 43 seems unlikely. But there ends my
pessimism, well nearly!
There are good reasons for optimism. Yes there are.
Sheffield Wednesday has been showing good resilience in
recovering from going a goal down. The team are clearly
working for each other and believe they can retrieve matches when
going behind. This has not always been the case in recent
years. Another major reason for optimism is the difficult
fixtures that remain for some of our rivals.
Iʼm hoping that Barnsley at least avoid defeat against Leicester,
because surely Leicester will lose at Stoke on the last day of
the season. Surely. That would reduce what Wednesday
need to achieve to a draw against Leicester and a draw against
either Norwich or Blackpool.
In addition Blackpool have Plymouth away and Watford at
home. Surely Paul Sturrockʼs Plymouth will defeat Blackpool
and promotion chasing Watford will get at least a draw at
Blackpool. A win at Blackpool for Wednesday would
probably be enough to finish above Blackpool. A draw will
probably leave us needing two more points to finish above
them.
So with my Wednesday coloured spectacles I think it will be
Blackpool or Leicester that will go down. But then again I
donʼt know if memory plays negative tricks on me, but I have
often thought that Wednesday are the type of club that do get
promoted or relegated if they have the opportunity to do
so. This was recently shown in winning the
play-offs.
Anyway I will be keeping one eye on the game at Barnsley this
weekend and hoping they do us a big favour. But Wednesday
could make it all so simple by just winning at Blackpool and
Leicester. Somehow I doubt that will be the outcome and I
will be left biting my nails at the Norwich game.
