Come and help celebrate the first anniversary of Speakers’ Corner Lichfield on 1 May at 11am – 12 noon at Speakers’ Corner in Dam Street.

Lichfield Speakers’ Corner was launched last May and became the second Speakers’ Corner outside London. In just one year, it has gone from strength to strength, with talks on Fairtrade, the Staffordshire Hoard, skateboarding, ‘what it means to be British’, celebrity appearances and much more.

Revd Dr Pete Wilcox, Chair Lichfield Speakers’ Corner Committee and Canon Chancellor of Lichfield Cathedral, explains: “To celebrate a very successful first year, we’re planning a fun community get together. We’ll be unveiling a fantastic new temporary sound sculpture by local artist Peter Walker, and there’ll be talks by local secondary pupils. And, with free party bags and party cakes for children young and old, it‘s set to be a great celebration. So, come along and celebrate the anniversary of the city’s new heart of public debate and free speech.”

The morning’s festivities will also include an appearance from the Town Crier, talks and a great cake giveaway at 12 noon hosted by Councillor David S. Smith, Leader of Lichfield District Council. To help mark the occasion children who have recently celebrated their own first birthdays will be given a certificate and party bag.
