WEYMOUTH FLORIST WINS OPEN4BUSINESS ACCOLADE

Fiona Penny the proprietor of Sunflowers florists in Weymouth celebrated success at the recent awards presentation evening hosted at Weymouth College having been voted the best Weymouth and Portland Small Business in a contest sponsored by the south and west Dorset region of Business Link.

Over one hundred and seventy business people attended the presentation which saw Sunflower Floral Designs take the premier award in the Federation of Small Businesses sponsored category which targeted enterprises which employ five or less individuals.

An excited Fiona said, ‘I am really pleased with this award. It is a fantastic achievement for both me and all my staff. It is a great reward for us all, particularly in the current financial climate. It has certainly inspired us to achieve greater successes in the future as we head towards 2012 and the Weymouth based sailing events of the Olympic Games’.

Fiona commenced her career in floristry as a part-timer, a ‘Saturday-girl’ in fact. From such beginnings she has developed her floral skills and allied them to her inherent design flair, which along with business acumen has progressed Sunflowers to the size and standard which is evident today at the St Thomas Street premises.

Fiona and her four members of staff, Tannis, Lisa, Rachel and Kate have collectively amassed over twenty years of experience in creating stunning contemporary floral displays for a wide range of purposes and functions. From simple bouquets and gift arrangements to corporate displays not to mention the wedding and funeral arrangements all are catered for with the same maxim, ‘flowers are not just our business, they are our inspiration.’

Having recently presented a floral bouquet to Her Majesty the Queen during the monarchs visit to Dorset we wonder whether we will be seeing bouquets from Sunflowers being centre stage at the medal presentation ceremony of the Olympic sailing regatta in three years time?

When asked which was her favourite flower and why, Fiona responded, ‘It must be Frangipani, because of its stunning appearance and of course its lovely fragrance. Not to mention that these flowers always remind me of the warmth and sun enjoyed whilst on holiday.’
