BUY LOCAL - The challenges facing business owners in Porth of Rhondda

As many business feel the pinch of the recession no place has found it as tough as Porth. With over 15 empty shop units and huge access problems why is more not being done to help this unique valleys gateway town?

We recently saw the development of the new Morrisons Superstore, which hold the largest car park in the town centre yet restrictions have been imposed on local shoppers and shop owners with many stories of parking fines on a regular basis.

Across town the problem grows - local council car parks have recently received increase in parking charges, Hannah street's one way system with temporary parking is 'poorly designed' according a shop owner of the local pet store. Another Interior designs shop owner relocated due to the significant problems to access for his business.

With reduced footfall, less money and shoppers time in town being restricted. Plus, little parking and a host of over 15 empty shops and much what does Porth still offer the local shopper or one visiting this historic town?

A challenge is the answer. Porth business owners have reestablished the Porth business forum, quite simply in adversity they are teaming up. Hopefully, the local government will actually consult with this forum directly and set some strategies for a collaborative improvement plan - it's needed!

The Good Bits.

However, all said, if you get the chance to visit Porth, you should - What Porth can boast that many larger towns are muted by, is the variety and extent of independant shops.

We'd recomend travel by train - the staion is at the top end of the Hannah street the main shopping area. From here you can explore some of the delights of valleys shopping.

Shopping in Porth offers consumers:

  • One of The Best Pet shop in the Valleys, 'Twinpet'
  • Card & Gift Shops
  • Discount Shops
  • Furniture Stores
  • Bakeries/ Baguettes
  • Apollo Bathrooms and Kitchen Designers
  • Butchers - South Wales Meats, located behind the fire station
  • Branded childrens clothing shops
  • And last but not least the most modern and vibrant cafe bar and restaurant north of Pontypridd - Dylans Cafe Bar & Restaurant
  • If you did come by car, why not book in for a full valet at Rhondda Valet whilst you shop about town.

So on your next day off - support your local businesses and BUY LOCAL.
