500 race supporting people will be in Plymouth that evening all looking for bed and breakfast B&B, food and a hot shower!
It is now just 5 months to run to the Official Start of the ‘Round Britain Powerboat Race’ on June 21st 2008. The organiser’s plans for this huge maritime motor sports event are well advanced at RB’08 Race Control in the UK. Plymouth is the first leg.
Event Director, Mr Mike Lloyd confirmed that registered entries and expressions of firm interest from national and international competitors exceeded 50 race boats. “It would seem that we have struck a chord with Adventurers both in Europe and alson from racers in the United States.
This is more than just a race. It is an adventure on a grand scale which will not be undertaken by the faint-hearted. In fact this is the zentih of powerboat racing, requiring serious planning and financial commitment just to get to the Start Line. Much physical commitment is required to get around the 1,600 miles of extremely difficult seas along Britain’s coastline.
The first leg from Portsmouth will finish in Plymouth opposite the “Hoe” on the afternoon of Saturday the 21st from 2pm onwards and the fleet will be staying the night moored at Mayflower Marina Plymouth. The Fleet will be re-fuelling in Plymouth and making necessary repairs before setting off the next morning for Milford Haven some 200 miles away. Some 300 to 400 support personnel will be following the fleet making a total number of some 500 in Plymouth that evening all looking for B&B, food and a hot shower!
This race does not currently have an overall sponsor and is running as a Corinthian Event funded completely by the racers themselves. Filming the race and TV is being negotiated as we speak. The “Top Gear” film crew are taking part in the race and are actually filming it as well. Plymouth will be the backdrop to some of this filr.
