Shiatsu is a Japanese form of massage, based on the holistic system of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where illness is believed to result from imbalances in the natural flow of Ki (energy) through the body.
How does Shiatsu work?
A Shiatsu Practioner will stimulate the flow of Ki through the Meridians (energetic pathways) with the application of pressure to the pathway. A Shiatsu Practioner applies pressure using the fingers, thumbs, hands, elbows, and sometimes the knees and feet. Mobilisation of joints, and the stretching of muscles and meridian lines also affect the flow of Ki.
This work promotes self-healing, as Shiatsu massage stimulates circulation, releases tense muscles, relaxes the nervous system and improves joint flexibility.
During a Shiatsu massage, you remain fully clothed and it is advisable to wear loose fitting and comfortable clothing.
What is Ki? (pronounced Chee)
Ki is a fundamental concept of TCM. It is our ‘life essence’ which maintains and nurtures our physical body, our mind and our spirit.
When a wound or injury heals by itself, Ki is flowing as it should. However, when Ki becomes stagnant, the body becomes unwell. Shiatsu balances the flow of Ki through the body.
