By reopening a club which was once used by her grandparents, a woman is bidding to breath fresh new life into an Oxford community.

The Royal British Legion club, in Ulfgar Road, Wolvercote, will be turned into a community centre by 23-year-old Emma Buckett and her partner, 27-year-old Andrew Patterson.

Miss Buckett said when it used to be a community centre, she had fond memories of spending time at the club with her grandmother.

For years, the local branch of the Royal British Legion has been based in Ulfgar Road.

However, the group is folding at the end of this month due to dwindling numbers.

The couple said they offered to take on the lease of the vacant building and turn it into The Canal Club, when they heard about the closure.

Miss Buckett said: "My dad's parents were born and bred in Wolvercote.

She also said: "When I heard the British Legion was not going to be based there anymore, I thought it would be so sad to see the building mothballed, so offered to try to create a community centre there.

She stated: "My dad loved coming to the club when he was a boy, and a lot of old family pictures are of places in and around Wolvercote. I want the club to be like it was in its heyday."

Completely redecorating and refurbishing the building so it can be reopened, as a club on 30th July is included in the plan.

The couple is applying for a Lottery grant to create a ramp for disabled access and they are hoping to create a play area for families.

Mr Patterson, plans to manage the club and he said: "We just want it to be used by the whole community.

He also said: "We are hoping to put a pool team together and an Aunt Sally team.

He stated: "There will be a big function room where we can hopefully run all sorts of things for people living in the area.

He added: "Our aim is to make it a focal point for the community of Wolvercote and far beyond. At the moment, there are not really any family-friendly places in the area. I think its unique selling point is the fact that it has an enclosed garden, which can be easily locked up, making it a very safe place for children to play."

    What are RSS Feeds?

RSS feeds allow you to see when websites have added new content. You can get the latest headlines and stories in one place, as soon as they are published, without having to visit the websites you have taken the feed from.

How do I start using feeds?

In general, the first thing you need is something called a feed reader. This is a piece of software that checks the feeds and lets you read any new articles that have been added. There are many different versions, some of which are accessed using a browser, and some of which are downloadable applications. IE 7.0 has a good feed reader built in, otherwise try Feedreader.
