This Charitable Organisation based near Nottingham is raising money for research into ALD - a rare terminal illnes

Olivers Army - a Nottingham based Charity

When it comes to raising awareness and funds for terminal illness, ALD, Nottingham charitable organisation, Olivers Army, is here to stay.

Adrenoleukodystrophy is a rare terminal illness, usually only detected when a young boy shows symptoms of the illness, by which time it is too late to save his life. Ironically, it is when one’s brother becomes ill that it is possible to test other males in the family. Even if they do not show signs, they can be checked and monitored regularly. If signs of ALD are developing, it is possible to halt the disease by carrying out bone marrow transplantation.

Symptoms of ALD are, but not limited to:

  • Declining schoolwork
      - Poor handwriting
      - Child becomes bored
  • Loss of vision
      - Moving head rather than using peripheral vision
  • Poor speech
      - Declining until lost
  • Loss of hearing
  • Dementia
  • Seizures
  • Loss of mobility and use of limbs

Incredibly, there is currently no UK research or funding into ALD. It is up to charitable organisations such as Nottingham based Olivers Army charity to raise money by appealing to the public.

With your help, Olivers Army charity are funding in 2007:

  • The Max-Planck Institute, Germany - £100,000
  • The Paris Inserm, France - £40,000

The Nottingham charity holds regular concerts and events that include performers such as singer, Elkie Brooks and Dynamo, one of the UK’s most exciting magicians and illusionists. These celebrities donate their time to a cause that is currently receiving little government exposure, raising money that goes towards the funding of International Research facilities. Olivers Army also holds sponsorship events and invites the public to hold charitable events on its behalf that it will advertise on

The Durham Ox pub at Orston, near Nottingham, is also part of Olivers Army. No income is taken at this Nottingham pub; instead, all profits will go to the charity.
