T R Johnson Family Butchers in Wooler, Northumberland, has been serving the local community for over 40 years.
Butchers Alan Cowan and Derrick McDougal source the finest local meats and other produce for Johnson’s Family Butchers, which is the most northerly member of the Rare Breeds Survival Trust.
Local rare breeds Northumberland produce includes:
- Galloway Cattle from Great Whittingham, Hexham
- Pork - Saddleback Tamworth and Middlewhite – from Lowick, Alnwick
- Vendeen and Cross Vendeen lamb (renowned for their flavour) from Neil Howie of North Lyham Farm, near Alnwick
We also have a supply of Cross Aberdeen Angus from Millar’s of Speyside. Beef carcases are hung for a minimum of 21 days to ensure a perfect flavour and texture.
Also, November to February, Blackface lambs from Ingram - they spend their lives on the hill and have a unique flavour.
Local beef is purchased at the local Aklington Mart so we can be sure of the quality.
We are supplied with venison, British chickens and chicken fillets from Country Valley Foods. We have an excellent supply of Free Range Chickens from Blagdon Farms who also supply our Free Range Birds at Xmas.
In our shop you will find a wide range of home-cured and home-cured smoked bacon e.g. streaky back middles and gammon – all of which are cured on the premises. There is also a wide range of sausage which are made on the premises. The most popular are the Rare Breed Pork and the Northumberland sausage. We also make gluten-free sausage and Pork and Beefburgers.
We also have a large selection of homemade pies, pastries, and quiches – ranging from individual to family sizes. The eggs we sell are all local, including organic, free range and quails’ eggs.
We also stock a wide range of chutneys and preserves.
