Recruitment agencies 'should consider older graduates'

Recruitment agencies are being advised to consider older graduates when taking on new employees on so as not to miss out on a substantial pool of talent.
According to new research from the Association of Graduate Recruiters (AGR), many graduates do not start a permanent career of training scheme as soon as they leave university, and as such are missed by employers.
Indeed it says these so called hidden graduates can easily slip through the net under the current strategies adopted by recruitment agencies, and as such these strategies need to be changed.
The AGR claims hidden graduates could prove extremely valuable to businesses. While they may not possess the same drive and leadership abilities as those who go for graduate training scheme and placements as soon as they leave university, they will have acquired valuable experience since their graduation that fresh graduates may not have.
Carl Gilleard, chief executive of the AGR, said: "This research indicates that many recruiters need to broaden their methods so not to miss out on this significant and skilled group of graduates.
"With growing levels of student debt and legislation aimed at eliminating age discrimination in the workplace, recruiters need to up their game to access this more diverse pool, recognising that many have gained transferable skills from their different workplace experiences."
