Standby printers costing millions

Many UK firms are running up large electricity bills because workers fail to turn off printers and computers, claims new research.
Leading IT company Canon estimated that office equipment left on standby over the ten-day Christmas period could waste a total of 43.6 million KwH of electricity as well as having a negative impact on the global environment. Around 19,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions will be produced by the machines that are not fully switched off.
It is expected that staff will leave around 840,000 multifunctional printers on standby over the festive holiday, which will add an extra £2.8 million to the energy bills of UK-based businesses.
David Smith, business marketing director, Canon UK, said: "It's clear that some equipment needs to be left on over the Christmas period for security reasons but these amazing figures show that businesses that don't turn off their PCs and printers are literally throwing money away as well as damaging the environment over the festive period."
"We have only looked at office equipment that is left in standby mode so imagine how much higher these figures could be if devices are left completely on," he added.
