Plumber to plunge his last plughole after 50 years

A Carlisle-based plumbers' firm is to cease trading at the end of the year as both its boss and longest serving employee hang up their plungers.

Tony Park is retiring from the firm having spent 50 years servicing pipes, taps and boilers in the local area.

And along with Mr Park, Brian Bowes, the boss of WJ Bowes, will also be leaving the family firm. But without a buyer to replace him, this means that the company will cease to be on the anniversary of its half century.

Mr Park told the Cumberland News: "It's nice to work for a family firm which really cares about its staff.

"A lot of people have come and gone in that time and I have made some great friends."

He added that it was a lot easier today for trainee plumbers to get started in the profession, mostly as there was "no plastic" back when he started and that "jobs took a lot longer".

Mr Park will finish with the firm on December 15th, a day shy of his 65th birthday and some 49 years and nine months since he started with the plumbing firm.
