Scottish MPs have hit out at plans to have a New York-based photographer snap two of the country's top politicians.
Glasgow-born Harry Benson has been commissioned to take two portraits for the government's art collection at a cost of more than £8,000, £4,000 per picture and additional costs for flights and accommodation in Edinburgh.
Presiding officer George Reid and his predecessor Lord Steel are the two men who are to be the subject of the photographs but the cost of the exercise has been called "excessive".
MSP Tommy Sheridan said: "Although [Mr Benson] is world-renowned, I am sure we could find a very capable Scot who could take the pictures at a fraction of the cost."
But a spokesperson for Holyrood has said that use of Mr Benson is well worth the cost as it will help to showcase Scottish talent.
The spokesperson said: "The parliament is proud to be involved in showcasing Scottish artistic talent.
"Whilst the portraits have not yet been taken, they will form an important part of the art at Holyrood, which aims to showcase the unique spirit and character of the Scottish nation and its people."
Mr Benson is one of the world's top photographers and has worked with a host of celebrities including the Beatles and a number of US presidents.
