London students pay more to rent

Students in London are paying letting agents and landlords over £100 a week in rent, one of the highest amounts in the UK.

According to housing website Accommodation for Students, the average amount paid in rent by those studying at universities across the UK is £58.19 but in London it is £102.

The survey looked at 29,000 properties across 63 university towns and found that areas in the south-east, along with Oxford and Cambridge, dominated the top ten.

Co-founder of the property website Simon Thompson said: "Now that students are accumulating large borrowings to subsidise their study, the cost of accommodation has become a critical factor in their choice of university."

Traditional red-brick universities like Manchester, Nottingham and Newcastle were far lower on the list and students using letting agents in Middlesbrough could rent rooms for as little as £38 a week.

Rent being paid to letting agents and landlords for student flats and houses has gone up by 3.3 per cent in the last year, according to the study.
