Letting agents fined in Leeds clamp-down

Leeds-based landlords and letting agents have been hit with fines totalling nearly £2,000 for overusing letting boards.

Three landlords have been fined for breaching a law designed to help control the number of letting agents' display boards in the city's student area.

In January, the directive was brought in to restrict the number of boards on display from letting agents after a number of complaints from local residents.

Homeowners in the Headingly and Hyde Park areas complained that the number of boards was unsightly and was bringing the neighbourhood down.

Headingly's Liberal Democrat councillor Martin Hamilton said: "This sends out a clear message that landlords and letting agents must stick to the rules or face the consequences."

These are the first three cases of prosecution since the law was introduced five months ago but there could be more on the way with a further 18 pending and 20 being prepared following a recent survey of the area.

The law sets down rules on the size, colour and number of display boards letting agents and landlords can display.
