Georgian house breaks Edinburgh rental record

Scottish letting agents will be hoping the rental market continues to boom with the news that a house has gone on the market for a whopping £39,000 a year.

According to Edinburgh Solicitors' Property Centre (ESPC), the four-bedroom house at 37 Heriot Row is the most expensive property ever to go onto the city's letting market.

Available for £3,250 a month, the property dwarfs the average rental price in Edinburgh of £622 and is only slightly more expensive per annum than buying a ground floor flat in the Wester Hailes area.

Indeed, the average property in Edinburgh could be bought for the equivalent of five years rent spent on the Georgian house.

DJ Alexander, the letting agency renting out the property, has said that the exuberant price has been driven by demand from eastern European businessmen travelling to Scotland for work.

David Alexander, owner of the letting agent, said: "The popular stereotype of someone from this region is a student or plumber.

"But there are a number of seriously wealthy people from east European countries who are interested in doing business here and want top-quality accommodation for six to 12 months."
