York hotels 'charge more than London'

York hotels are now more expensive than those in London and Edinburgh according to a new online survey.
Hotels.com accommodation finder says that the average price tourists to York pay to stay the night is now £103 – compared to £58 in Luton and £91 in London.
The Hotel Price Index, which has been criticised by tourism bosses as being inaccurate, was based on prices for 20,000 hotels across 1,000 locations. It was calculated according to the prices paid by real customers – not just advertisements.
Managing director of Hotels.com David Roche said: "Prices paid by travellers to Britain's major tourist cities are rising fast, with rises of one fifth and more over three months in many centres."
York was the forth most expensive place in the UK to rest your head after Bath which costs £130, Cardiff where tourists pay £120 and Brighton at £116 for a room.
Chairman of the York Hoteliers Group June Nelsey reacted with anger at the survey. She told the Yorkshire Post: "It is a nonsense and hardly worth responding to. I do not think they have a Minster in Luton, or city walls, or river boat trips. York is highly competitive."
