London to house glass hotel

London's skyline is set to change forever with the building of a new hotel in Southwark.

The £600 million glass tower will be 180m high, 45m higher than the London Eye and will house 261 rooms.

There are also plans for luxury suites, conference rooms and a ballroom to accommodate large-scale banqueting events catering for up to 800 people to be built.

Planning permission is expected to be granted by Southwark Council for the Jumeirah Hotel, which is being created by the Dubai-based Jumeirah Group.

The curved landmark, which will stretch 5-storeys, is set to be erected at the junction of Blackfriars Bridge and Blackfriars Road. It is hoped that the new building will serve to revamp the area and will be a major tourism boost for Southwark and the South Bank.

As well as the hotel accommodation, 32 residential apartments and penthouses set above the hotel building will also be on offer and should be ready by 2011.

The area surrounding the tower will include a new plaza at the base with cafes, restaurants and access via an express lift to a five-storey high public viewing gallery at the top of the building.
